It is nearly time for World Ocean Day 2016. This year it falls on Wednesday the 8th of June and as always, we here at Sea Watch will be getting involved. We would also like you to get involved too!
World Oceans Day is celebration of all things marine and has been running on the 8th of June yearly since 1992. Year on year the event has gotten bigger and was officially recognised by the United Nations in 2008. We want you to help us make World Oceans Day 2016 the best yet.
Our Events!
New Quay
Marine litter is a big threat to marine life and so we have teamed up with Keep Tidy Wales and the officer for the Marine protected area of West Wales to run a beach clean on the World Ocean’s Day on the 8th of June.
Our World Ocean’s Day beach clean is taking part on, 8th June 2016 at 14.00pm. If you would like to come along, meet us on
– New Quay Harbour Beach, Ceredigion at 13.45pm.
Bring some shoes that you don’t mind getting sandy and a smile! We will provide the rest. We look forward to seeing you!

Aberystwyth
Our Events in Aberystwyth highlight the impacts of our pollution and littering on beaches and the damage we do to the ecosystem – and what we can do to help!
“Oceans are the lifeblood of planet Earth and humankind. Flowing over nearly three-quarters of our planet, they are responsible for the production of more than 50% of our oxygen as well as the removal of man-made carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, the regulation of the climate and the provision of food and water to over 1/3 of our planets population.” comments Jack Harding, a local volunteer. “We seem to forget how important the ocean is to us, and through this disconnection we as a race have adopted unwise practices which have led to problems such as over-harvest of resources, reduction in biodiversity, degradation of marine habitats and species and plastic pollution, among others. We risk the very ecosystems on which our survival depends, if the oceans die, we die.”
Jack and a team of volunteers have set up a fantastic series of events to run in Aberystwyth on World Ocean’s day. there will be a number of events that anyone can get involved in that are both student led and community led:-
– 12pm: Beach clean with Aber Beach Buddies
– 2pm: A mermaids purse hunt and rockpooling with members of Penparcau Community Forum Wildlife Group
– 4pm: Cetacean Landwatch at the war memorial with members of NatureSoc and Sea Watch foundation volunteers

If you cant get involvd in either of these events, why not help us celebrate WOD by doing your own spontaneous beach clean or watch for cetaceans?
