Burghead headland on the Moray coast is well know for providing regular views of bottlenose dolphins, harbour porpoise, minke whales and the occasional killer whale. Alan Airey, SWF Regional Coordinator, frequently conducts land-watches from this site and others along this stretch of coastline.
Last weekend’s watch proved to be particularly successful with 61 bottlenose dolphins passing the headland in the space of two hours. Some of the animals were even seen to bow-ride a small trawler into Burghead Harbour which is something that Alan has only witnessed a handful of times before.
This just goes to show that cetacean watching can be a year-round activity! For more information on where to watch this winter, contact sightings@seawatchfoundation.org.uk
