Our newest Sea Watcher, Kelly, is also based in North Wales; she has already got stuck into her volunteering role and is excited to get out in the field! Here is what Kelly had to say about volunteering with the Welsh Sea Watchers Project!
“I have recently been in touch with the Welsh Sea Watchers about starting to volunteer for them, and I’m very excited to get started. Katrin has been very welcoming and informative.”
What is your role for Sea Watch?
My role for Sea Watch at the moment is to spread the word about Sea Watch using social media. Currently with the world of Twitter! Follow us @Welshseawatcher I’d love to get Sea Watch recognised by celebrities and have some support from a wide variety of people.
I have yet to go on a land watch, but I can not wait for the perfect opportunity to get training and give it a go.
How long have you been involved with Sea Watch Foundation?
Just over a week at the moment. Hopefully my next blog will be a bit more detailed and have all the fun details of my day out land watching and bring some media news along too.
What does your volunteer role involve/what are you hoping to do?
I would love to make a difference educating the public about what Sea Watch do and how they can help through the use of social media, blogs etc I’m hoping to dedicate a good amount of my spare time getting involved with the monitoring of the Welsh Waters!
Why did you apply for this position?
I applied for the volunteer role to begin my career journey in to conservation. Working with a charity or organisation involved in any kind of wild life is my main goal, and this is the first exciting step towards it.
Do you do any other work/studies besides?
At the moment, I have a full time job as a Trainee Veterinary Nurse, spending one day a week at college in St Helens. This is my second year I am just beginning and I absolutely love the job. Sometimes it can be heart breaking when you can’t help nurse every animal to a full recovery, but the moments that you can send an animal home, and see how excited they are to see their family, makes it all worth while. Although the studying is time consuming and intense, I wouldn’t want it any other way!
Do you have any hobbies or other interests?
As my time has been spent studying and working long days, I’ve struggled to fit in any kind of hobby! Now I begin to get a little bit of time free, I thought I’d focus on something important…sea watching!
Do you have any exciting plans for the future?
Next year, once I am a full qualified veterinary nurse, I am hoping to travel to Peru to help with a canine neutering scheme. There are so many areas of conservation, and animal care I would love to get involved in. I wish I could split myself in to 10 and spread myself all over the world!
