As you may know, we name some of our more frequently sighted dolphins and given it’s the season of spooks and sweet treats, we thought we would give some attention to our more fantastically named dolphins! Who would you like to learn more about? Wise Gandalf, named after the illustrious white wizard of Middle-Earth, spooky Ghost, cunning Voldemort, named for Harry Potter’s nemesis or draconic Draco? If you are delighted by dragons, you will love our first dolphin profile, royal Rhaegar, named after Prince Rhaegar of house Targaryen, once a great house in the world of G.R.R. Martin’s Westeros and famously the only ones to bend dragons to their will!
Rhaegar
Rhaegar was first entered into our histories in mid-November 2005, when he first arrived to Cardigan Bay. This initial sojourn to our lands was a brief one, and he soon left again to wander yet more. He returned in 2012, a mature adult of great stature, and took up new residence in the south of the Cardigan Bay SAC, around the town of Cardigan.
A handsome and gregarious dolphin, Rhaegar is not only strong and willfull enough to make the long journeys away from the bay, but a talented muscian who creates beautiful melodies with a range of clicks and whistles. He is popular among his fellow dolphins, and has been seen carrousing with a great deal of the smallfolk dolphins at different times. However, this popularity and travel mean that he does not spend a his long summers with any particular individuals. If he has close confidants, he has kept them secret from us. Strangely, while living in the same area as Viserys, the two do not seem to interact!
2015 was a turning point in Cardigan Bay dolphin history. Rhaegar became enamoured with the beautiful Smoothie, declaring her the Queen of Love and Beauty. In circumstances that are not fully clear, Rhaegar and Smoothie eloped together, quickly leaving the company of other dolphins. Shortly following these events, Rhaegar was spotted just once, among a group of 14 other dolphins, who we assume were remaining loyal compatriots, including Gandlf, Haf, Trouble, and Elisha.
Rhaegar has now not been seen for almost a year. His actions have proven that despite our dreams, he was not the adoptable dolphin that was promised. However, we nonetheless wait with hope that he will one day return to our shores, and bless the waters with his music once more!
Thanks to volunteer, Thomas Bell, for turning this profile into a Sea Watch Spooktacular for us!
