Orca Watch 2022 is now up and running.
Yesterday our volunteer observers were on the John O’Groats ferry, and were delighted to catch sight of a bull orca from the last ferry of the day – a great start to the week. 2 bull orca were also seen from Gills Bay heading west along the southern coast of Stroma, heading for Hoy. And it’s not just orca – early afternoon, there was a sighting of Risso’s dolphin, heading north from Auckengill (where orca were also seen that day).
Today our teams of volunteer observers were also out and about doing effort-related land watches – even if they see nothing, this is useful data – but our team at Dunnet Head were thrilled to spot a couple of porpoise first thing.
Later on today, the team in the Orca Watch base became very excited to hear news of a single fin off the east end of Swona – but although we thought we saw something, we couldn’t be sure. And news has just come in of a single minke heading towards Duncansby Stacks – let’s hope it continues to head that way.
