On watch for wildlife

The Sea Watch Foundation is proud to support British Science Week (13th-22nd March); we strongly believe that public awareness of nature and ecology issues are crucial to supporting long term conservation goals and use every opportunity to engage with people. British Science Week offers a unique opportunity to reach out to people of all ages and allow them to gain an insight into how science works on an everyday basis- and hopefully inspire them to take part themselves!

This year, we are particularly excited to be taking part as we will also be launching the very first Junior branch of our Welsh Sea Watchers Project in conjunction with the newly founded Seaside Rangers.

The Welsh Sea Watchers Project was established in 2013 with the generous support of the Wales Volunteering Fund. The purpose of the project is to monitor whales, dolphins and porpoises around the Welsh coast with the help of volunteers carrying out land and boat-based surveys, and to raise public awareness of the fantastic wildlife that can be seen off the Welsh Coast. Typically this work is carried out by volunteers over the ages of 18 but why should adults have all the fun? The Seaside Rangers are here to change that.

The Seaside Rangers support outdoor learning and environmental education, aiming to inspire the marine biologists, ecologists and conservationists of the future in protecting our blue planet and saltwater environments. There will be regular monthly meets and field trips are arranged seasonally throughout the year.

Together, the Sea Watch Foundation and the Seaside Rangers are offering a number of fun and educational activities during British Science Week, kicking off on the 21st March with the ‘Seaside Science’ Family Day.

To celebrate British Science Week, the Heritage Coast Centre and Southerndown Beach will come alive with Seaside Science for all the family. Join costal rangers, marine wildlife club leaders and staff from the Sea Watch Foundation on the coast for a day packed with activities, outdoors and in, from hands on beach exploration to films, identification and learning how to spot, watch and record dolphins and porpoise along our coast. Join in fun activities such as a rock pool rambles, seaside safaris or join us on a land-based dolphin watch and learn all about local whales dolphins and porpoises! Program to follow!

Here’s what’s on…
> Please be aware that ALL sessions are available to ALL family members.
> For Seaside Rangers activities only, children aged 8+ may be left unaccompanied. Little Urchins (children aged 7 and under) must be accompanied at all times by an adult.

> Outdoors sessions will go ahead whatever the weather.  Please make sure you wear   (or bring) appropriate clothing.

> Charges for Seaside Rangers activities go directly to raise funds for the kids marine wildlife club.
