Hello and welcome all to National Whale and Dolphin Watch Dairies 2021! Let’s take a look at the weekend highlights.
July 28th, 2021
There were 54 watches today; 17 in Scotland, 6 in Wales, 30 England, and 1 in the Channel Islands. We’ve had a great start to the watch with 46 sightings reported (and more are streaming in as we speak) of 6 different marine species. Check the map below to see some of the sightings which were verified by our Sightings Team:
- Bottlenose dolphin
- Common seal
- Grey seal
- Harbour porpoise
- Minke whale
- Common dolphin
We’ve had reports of three bottlenose dolphins travelling quickly along the shore in a group including a juvenile which were sighted off the Burghead Heritage Centre in Moray by Amy Baxter. Minke whales were the biggest surprise of the day with sightings recorded off Newbiggin, Northumberland and Donmouth, Aberdeenshire, where the whales were recorded feeding in association with birds close to shore. The team of Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust sighted common dolphins fast travelling and feeding just a kilometre off Berry Head, Cornwall.

Remember that records of species absence are just as important! So please send in your recording forms even if you don’t see any cetaceans.
