An exciting sighting was reported off Dunwich in Suffolk on 13th September. While walking along the beach, Gerard Kay spotted a large whale just meters from the shore. The animal surfaced a few times giving Gerard some excellent photo opportunities. Thanks to Gerard’s sightings report and this photographic evidence, we were able to confirm the species as a humpback whale!!
Although this species is regularly sighted further north off the coast of Yorkshire and Northumberland, it is very rare to see these animals so far south and so close to shore. Needless to say that Gerard was incredibly lucky to have been in the right place at the right time and we are very lucky that he had his camera on him at the time!
