Are you passionate about protecting marine wildlife? Do you have a special interest in whales, dolphins, porpoises? Would you like to learn more about British cetacean populations by regularly carrying out surveys?
Learn how to survey whales, dolphins and porpoises at sea, by joining the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and Sea Watch Foundation’s one-day courses in Yorkshire on April 27th and April 28th.
Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and Sea Watch Foundation are teaming up to improve data collection in the Yorkshire area and would like the help of passionate volunteers to become dedicated Sea Watch Observers to help us achieve this.
By becoming a Sea Watch Observer you will provide important information about how, where and when cetaceans use Yorkshire coastal waters, enabling us to better protect these animals using conservation measures. Anyone can be an Observer: all you need is enthusiasm, a pair of binoculars (provided) and a little patience. If you enjoy spending time by the coast regularly, why not take time to record what you see – and what you don’t?!
We will provide full training on how to undertake dedicated cetacean surveys for all volunteers. Liaising with the project co-ordinator, you will decide on a ‘watching station’ on the coastline from which to regularly conduct surveys.
Attendance at Sea Watch Observer training course is essential. There are two training dates available: Saturday 27th April at the Living Seas Centre, Flamborough OR Sunday 28th April at Whitby YHA, Whitby. This will be a full day course from approximately 9am until 5pm, including time spent in the field sea watching. There are no other dates available for training, so if you cannot make either if these planned days you will be not be able to volunteer in this role as the training is essential. Please indicate on your application form which training day you would like to attend.
You can find out much more about the opportunity, a detailed role description and an application form should you wish to apply on our webpage here. Please return your completed application form to volunteering@ywt.org.uk.
