Hi everyone! My name is Emma and I grew up in Somerset, South West of England. Having spent many summers in Cornwall I fell in love with the ocean. I would stand for hours (and still do) along the coastal paths squinting out to sea, hoping to spot those tell-tale signs of cetacean species and be thrilled if I momentarily saw a porpoise fin popping out, a seal’s nose peeking through waves or perhaps even a pod of dolphins! I have always aspired to work within Marine Conservation, so I am delighted to be working as one of the Education and Outreach Assistants for Sea Watch Foundation this year.
This will be my second summer spent with the charity after working as a Research Intern in 2018. I enjoyed the position immensely, from completing line transects along the coastline to collecting data in the offices for scientific analysis. The part I enjoyed most, however, was on the pier doing land watches. They gave me the opportunity to chat to everyone who gathered around and point out the dolphins we spotted; the delight of adults and children alike, whether it was their 1st or 50th time seeing dolphins, is what makes me so excited to return as the Education and Outreach Assistant.
My role is to bring the science, ecology and wonder of cetaceans, to you. We will be organising and hosting online events, webinars and talks, and as soon as restrictions allow, will be heading to New Quay with all sorts of activities planned such as film nights, beach cleans and the notorious National Whale and Dolphin Week. I believe that everyone should have the opportunity to experience the magic of the UK’s marine environment; not only because awareness and love for them generates greater protection, but because the oceans provide a plethora of benefits to everyone including significant improvements to our personal wellbeing and happiness. I cannot wait to get started!
