Cornwall Wildlife Trust coordinates a region project called Seaquest Southwest, which is run jointly with Devon Wildlife Trusts and collects sightings of all marine creatures from the public. This long standing project has resulted in a steady stream of data over the years giving us a fantastic insight into our spectacular Cornish marine wildlife such as rare bottlenose dolphins and basking sharks.
The Seaquest Southwest project utilises this valuable information sent in by the public, and from such a simple scheme comes effective and worthwhile research. All data is stored within the Environmental Records Centre for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly (ERCCIS), and shared both regionally and nationally with the Sea Watch Foundation for the better conservation of the species and habitats that exist in our marine environment.
During the winter of 2012, Cornwall Wildlife Trust needed to decide where the project was going into the future. As a result, we have produced a busy programme of exciting events across the county in 2013, from public sea watches to a recorders conference, and the launch of our new Seaquest Sundays surveys. To join Seaquest Southwest email seaquest@cornwallwildlifetrust.org.uk or check out our website www.cornwallwildlifetrust.org.uk/livingseas.
